From January 24th to March 16th 2025, the FRAC Champagne-Ardenne presents the exhibition Cet obscur objet du désir. Borrowing its title from the feature film by Luis Buñuel (1977), this exhibition comprises a selection of works that engage with the representation of the female body, perceived and treated as an object of desire.
A selection of about twenty works from the collections of the three FRACs in the Grand-Est region compare different mechanisms for the objectification of women, a process to which the history of art and cinema have largely contributed. Displayed throughout the FRAC Champagne-Ardenne, the exhibition highlights the obscure nature of a desire that transforms the subject into an object, and the difficulty of self-definition between adherence, diversion and reappropriation of this desire.
Responding to each other through common subjects or forms, the works presented in the exhibition invite critical reflection on the implications that modes of representation have on the dynamics of desire around the female body.
